Moving to Texas

Posted on Thursday February 06, 2014 at 10:15pm in ,

January 10th was my last day at JB Systems. I planned to move to Texas. I wanted to make a change, get some sun, and find a good job. On the 15th, I started my cross-country road trip to Dallas. Here is a map of the route that I took.

I actually downloaded an app called Lapse-It to my phone and recorded a time lapse of the entire trip from start to finish. There’s an app for everything, huh? Check out the entire trip, compressed into under 3 minutes:

It was a fun drive! My car was super dirty at the end of it, as well as my bike which I mounted on the back. I stayed in hotels for my first two weeks in Texas while I looked for a place. Life in the hotels was pretty dull. I didn’t do anything – just stayed in, watched movies, and saved money.

My new job in Dallas is a company called rewardStyle. Click the link for more info and pictures. It’s basically a dream job. Great salary, benefits, fully stocked kitchen (replenished daily), hack nights monthly, you get a brand new macbook and huge 30” display, gym membership, Apple store downstairs, breakfast on Wednesday mornings, lunches on Friday, get to develop software products and apps, great location in uptown, etc… Oh wait, I forgot the best part. They have a bar in the office. It’s awesome! I started on Monday, so I’ve had 4 days there so far. After tomorrow I’ll have finished my first week at my new job!

Here’s the new MacBook they gave me. I really liked that I got to go to the Apple store and pick it out personally. It’s a MacBook Pro with Retina display. The screen resolution is really something else. Amazing to look at.

As for apartments, I looked at 4 different places. Three in Irving and one in Dallas. The one in Dallas wasn’t much more expensive than the other apartments and it came with a washer/dryer/small balcony. However, it was a studio apartment (just one room). The one that really stood out for me was the one in Las Colinas, Irving. It had a lot of space, a huge balcony and was a great price (cheaper than the one in Dallas). It is about 25 minutes from work by car, or just over one hour on bike, but I really liked Las Colinas as a neighborhood. The apartment complex I chose is called Bella Casita.

It has a fitness center and pool. The rooms were really nice, too. Below are some pictures I just took of my room. Keep in mind I don’t really have any stuff (just whatever would fit in my compact Jetta) so the place is still looking pretty sparse. Also, all my stuff is kinda just sitting on the floor because I don’t have a bed or shelves or any furniture yet. I will post some nicer pictures of the place all tidied up later, but I just wanted to snap some shots of “the first days.”
