The Harris family had to say goodbye to its furriest member last Friday. Sierra’s health has been a steady decline for the last year (maybe two years) and she recently took a turn for the worst. She stopped eating, had a hard time getting up and walking up stairs, and she lost a lot of her energy. Her eyesight and hearing was bad and she didn’t seem to always know what was going on. A few days after she stopped eating she also stopped drinking water. We all knew she wouldn’t last much longer so we tried to spend as much time with her as our busy schedules would allow. She spent the last of her days laying out in the sun in the grass and watching the cars go by.
On Friday, it had been over a week since she’d last eaten, the last of her energy was gone, and it was time to say goodbye. She wasn’t going to get better, so we had to have her put to sleep. She didn’t seem like she was suffering, but it’s hard to say. I wish that I could understand what she felt or what she was thinking. Dogs don’t have a concept of permanence, or a concept of death. I wonder if she woke up and knew it was going to be her last day, or that her time was running out. I like to think that she was just feeling like she was getting tired and ready to sleep.
Here are some pictures of Sierra that I like. There are a lot more throughout this blog, just search for “Sierra” in the search box and see what else is out there. These are from July 23rd, 2011 – about two years ago. I miss her already.
