Posted on Wednesday February 25, 2009 at 3:14pm in ,

This morning I got an email from my host mother. I will be receiving formal information on my family later this week in the mail, but it was nice to hear from her first. Her name is Kyoko Nishi. Our correspondence so far…

From Kyoko to Drew
Subject: We Are Host Family

Hello Drew,
I am your host mother Kiyoko.
We are waiting for you to come to our home.
I like English, but I can’t speak, hear and write well. I believe that you and my family will have good relationship.
In my home, I live with my husband, but we have dinner with my grandson ,Nozomi who is 8 years old and he is in the second grade elementary school. His mother works as a career woman from Monday to Friday. He is a good boy.

I have two daughters and a son. Each daughters have children. So I have three grandchildren.
My son is single who works at Okayama prefecture as a assistant of ceramist.
I guess you have came to Japan. When and where? Homestay?
We are looking forward to seeing you.

Show me yourself, please.

Kiyoko Nishi

Cool! By the way, the last line doesn’t actually mean ‘show me yourself’ it means ‘please teach me a little about yourself.’ Here is what I wrote back (I will translate it as well)…

I am looking forward to coming to Japan! I am 19 years old. I have 3 part time jobs that mostly involve either fixing computers or making websites.
I have been studying Japanese for around 6 years. But, I am not yet fluent. I think I am able to do casual conversation well, though.
I went to Japan for the first time 2 years ago. I stayed with a host family. I have lived in Tokyo, Osaka, and Yokohama. I’ve never been to Nagasaki!
By the way I have a favor to ask. Would it be okay if I go to see my friend who is staying in Osaka sometime before classes begin? I would like to travel a lot!
Do you have any family photos? Please show me if you do.

Looking forward to meeting you

From Drew

So that’s it so far. Pretty exciting.

In other news, I have a new favorite shirt…

Sushi Shirt

If you can’t see what the shirt is, just click the image to get a larger view. This’ll be a perfect shirt for wearing around Japan… Kind of like Bryan’s shirt that our boss got him. He even got on (click to view his page.) That’s Bryan standing outside of the Love Temple in Kyoto on Valentine’s Day. The shirt translates to: “Now accepting applications for a Japanese girlfriend.”
