Bryan's Going Away Party

Posted on Sunday January 18, 2009 at 10:31pm in

First of all, this weekend was great. On Friday night, Mike, Bryan and I went to go see Gran Torino. Unfortunately, it was completely sold out. We waited in a huge line to get tickets for the next day. We didn’t think we would need them for a daytime showing, but we decided to play it safe and get the tickets in advance. We then went to go meet Ryan Harp at Borders, since our plans to see the movie had been canceled. We ended the night with some Rockband at Mike’s house.

Saturday we got to see Gran Torino. Good thing we bought our tickets in advance because the place was packed. We ended up having to sit in the very first row. Let’s talk a bit about this movie.

Gran Torino is about an old Korean War veteran. The old man is more than a little racist. His neighborhood is slowly being populated by Hmong people, for whom he has little tolerance. A Hmong boy who lives next door is forced into stealing the old man’s prized 1972 Gran Torino as a gang initiation. The boy’s plans are quickly thwarted by the old man. To make amends for his crime, the boy works for the man. The gang is outraged by the boy’s betrayal and their retaliation is devastating. It’s the best movie I’ve seen in a long time. I’m highly recommending it to everyone. Absolutely see it! It’s a movie you will remember for a long time.

After the movie we got together for Bryan’s going away party with a few friends. We had dinner at Applebees, went to Racy’s for some drinks, and then back to my house to play Rockband for a while. I got him a cake at the store, and had them write “goodbye, bryan!” in Japanese. Unfortunately, their Japanese writing skills leave much to be desired.

Notice the scrawlings on the cake? Anyway, not a big deal.

Today! I wrote another song on guitar in the morning. I’ve been in a song writing mood lately. I had a moment of enlightenment at guitar lessons and ever since then I’ve been feeling like making stuff of my own. Click here to listen to the new song. It’s just a background track with an intro, two verses and an outro. Nothing too fancy, it sounds like something that could use some lyrics and vocals.

In the evening, I went to a JCS meeting. Tae-san came in from Chicago and treated us all to a huge meal at Great Wall! It was a lot of fun and good to see Tae-san again. Great weekend! Unfortunately, next weekend there will be no more Bryan because he will be in Japan.
