Curse of the Golden Flower

I got this from the library on Tuesday. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it since the trailers were all very vague and not particularly enthralling fight sequences. But, I decided I’d give it a try since I usually like movies of this type and I was not disappointed. In fact, it’s one of the better movies I’ve seen in a long while. I don’t want to spoil anything, but it was very engaging and the ending is one of the most depressing endings I’ve seen. I love movies that have sad endings. And let me tell you, this one ends on a big downer. For those of you that aren’t fans of sad endings, the cinematography is marvelous and the characters are so easy to get excited and/or cheer for.

All throughout the film, I kept looking at the lead actress and thinking that she looked very familiar. Where had I seen her before…? I looked her up and she’s Gong Li. Turns out I’d seen her several times before – in Raise the Red Lantern, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Hannibal Rising. In Memoirs of a Geisha and Hannibal Rising, she plays the part of a Japanese person, but she is actually Chinese.

Saturday, Bryan and I went to Shanghai for sushi supper. While we were there we ran into Kayla (who is in my Japanese class) and her family. The sushi was great, thanks for asking.

Next weekend is Festival of Nations! Alas, before the weekend…I have a lonnnng week of lots and lots of schoolwork ahead of me.
